Library History

Henry Leslie Perry was the only child of Colonel Henry Perry and his wife Janie Hall Perry. He was born January 1, 1887. He became a prominent lawyer and city official in Henderson during the 1910's. His promising career was cut short by a rheumatic condition. He died on June 4, 1923.
A few months after his death, his parents and his wife, Mrs. Flora McKinnon Perry, applied for a charter of incorporation for the "H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library" in his memory. The charter was granted on May 19, 1924. The doors to the new library were opened on September 1, 1924 for the public's "use and enjoyment." At the time, this gift was the only one of its kind in North Carolina with the exception of the Olivia Raney Public Library in Raleigh and the Braswell Memorial Library in Rocky Mount.
Miss Bertie H. Craig, a graduate of N.C.C.W. and a New York City library school, was elected first librarian with Miss Eleanor Perry as assistant.
-Paraphrased from Zeb's Black Baby by Samuel Peace-
The library operated under the direction of private trustees until 1975 when its operation was transferred to the City of Henderson and Vance County. In October of 1986, the library moved to its Rose Avenue location. After years of publicity, fundraising, and a great deal of community support, Perry Library opened its new facility at 205 Breckenridge on July 5, 2006. With two floors, space for many books and materials, new computers, and as an Internet hot-spot, the new Perry Library is ready to serve Vance County as never before.
