Captain Andrew Jackson Harris Jr., was killed in action on October 18, 1918 in France during World War I. He was 26 years old.
Andrew Jackson Harris Jr. was born in Henderson, North Carolina on October 16, 1892, the son of Andrew Jackson Harris Sr. and Annie Lee Mitchell Harris.
Harris was inducted into the U.S. Army and served in the 321 st Regiment, 81 st Division which was deployed to Europe in 1918. The Division was sent to the St. Dié sector of France's Vosges Mountain region on September 19, 1918. There, as part of the French Seventh Army, the division held what was considered a quiet front although it fought off German trench raids and endured artillery bombardments. While serving in the St. Dié sector, the division suffered 116 casualties, including Captain Harris who died of wounds received in action on October 18, 1918.
Captain Andrew Jackson Harris Jr. is buried in Saint-Die-des-Vosges, Lorraine, France.
