Pvt Bullock was born in Middleburg Township, Vance County, North Carolina on September 20, 1894, the son of Edward W. Bullock Sr. and Amy Alexander Bullock. Prior to induction into the Army, he was engaged in farming in Middleburg.
Private Bullock was assigned to Company D of the segregated 810th Pioneer Infantry Regiment, U.S. Army, while it was stationed at Camp Greene, North Carolina, between September and December 1918 during World War I. The Pioneer Infantry was a specialized support regiment in the U.S. Army acting as combat engineers and laborers who built roads, bridges, and camps, cleared paths, and delivered supplies, while also being armed and trained for combat to handle emergencies or fill gaps in the front lines. These non-divisional units, often comprised of African-American soldiers, provided crucial logistical and engineering support, essential for moving troops and supplies but also performing tasks like salvaging battlefields and burying the dead after battles. Pvt. Bullock died of pneumonia on October 13, 1918 in the U.S. Army Base Hospital at Camp Greene, North Carolina.
