Technical Sergeant Earnest Walter Grissom was killed in action July 11, 1944 in France during World War II. He was 29 years old.
Earnest Walter Grissom was born on January 31, 1915 in Vance County, the son of Ernest Austin Grissom and Mamie Ladd Grissom. He was married to Ollie Mae Barfield Grissom in 1938. Before his induction into the U.S. Army, he was employed by the Raleigh Granite Company.
Earnest W. Grissom was inducted into the U.S. Army in September, 1940. His postings included: Fort Jackson, South Carolina; Fort Blanding, Florida; and Camp Atterbury, Indiana. He was deployed to the European Theater of Operations in January, 1944. He participated in the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944. He died on July 11, 1944 of wounds received the previous day.
Earnest Walter Grissom is buried in the Raleigh National Cemetery, Raleigh, North Carolina.
