Corporal George E. Edwards died on January 15, 1944 during training maneuvers in Tennessee while on active duty with the U. S. Army during World War II. He was 33 years old.
George E. Edwards was born in Vance County, North Carolina on February 17, 1910, the son of Umstead Edwards. He was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1943 in New York where he had been living for several years.
Cpl George E. Edwards trained at Camp Atterbury, Indiana and served in Company B of the 42nd Signal Construction Battalion. His death occurred in Tennessee maneuvers when a truck ran over him, crushing his lower body and resulting in his immediate death.
Cpl. George E. Edwards is buried in Burchette Chapel United Church of Christ Cemetery, Manson, Warren County, North Carolina.
