Fireman First Class James Tasker Weldon died of spinal meningitis on August 10, 1944 in the U.S. Naval Hospital, Norfolk, Virginia while on active duty during World War II. He was 21 years old.
James Tasker Weldon was born on February 25, 1923 in Vance County, North Carolina the son of Roy Thomas Weldon and Lucy Plummer Winn Weldon.
F1C Weldon enlisted in the U.S. Navy in December 1943. He trained at Bainbridge, Maryland where he was appointed to a special diesel school at the University of Illinois. From there he took further training at the Ford diesel school at Dearborn, Michigan. He had recently been sent to Camp Bradford at Norfolk, Virginia where he became ill with spinal meningitis and died in the Naval Hospital there on August 10, 1944 after a few days illness.
Fireman First Class James Tasker Weldon is buried in Liberty Christian Church Cemetery, Epsom, Vance County, North Carolina.
