Private Jessie Lee Huff was mortally wounded in action on July 28, 1944 in the hedgerows of Normandy, France and subsequently died on July 28, 1944 during World War II. He was 30 years old.
Jessie Lee Huff was born in Vance County, North Carolina on April 23, 1914, the son of John Junius Huff Jr and Irene Hunt Huff. He married Bessie Lou Abbott Terrell and had one son, Robert Macon Huff, who was eight years old at the time of his father’s death.
Pvt Huff was inducted into the U.S. Army in October, 1942 and deployed to the European Theater of War in April, 1944 serving with the 358th Regiment, 90th Division. The 358th landed on Utah Beach in the Normandy Invasion on June 8. By the 10th they had moved into the peninsula near Picauville, and experienced 'Hell on Earth' under heavy artillery. Moving steadily inland, the Regiment was engaged in hedgerow fighting between Le Calais and Colomby on June 17, 1944 the date on which Private Huff was mortally wounded. He died of the wounds on July 28, 1944.
Private Jessie Lee Huff is buried in the Crossroads Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery, Henderson, North Carolina.
