Second Lieutenant Lawrence Jackson Rux Jr was killed in the crash of an Army Air Corps plane near Greenfield, Indiana on March 20, 1942 while on active duty during World War II. He was 24 years old.
Lawrence Jackson Rux was born on December 3, 1917 in Henderson, North Carolina, the son of Lawrence Jackson Rux and Leona Currin Rux. He graduated from Henderson High School in the Class of 1934. He attended North Carolina State College.
In September, 1940, 2Lt Rux enlisted in Company C, 120th Infantry which was based in Henderson, North Carolina. He subsequently transferred to the Army Air Corps and trained at Maxwell Field, Alabama; Coral Gables, Florida; San Francisco, California; and Patterson Field, Dayton, Ohio. 2d Lt. Rux was serving as the navigator aboard a bomber flying out of Patterson Field on March 20, 1942 when the crash occurred killing four members of the crew, including Rux.
Second Lieutenant Lawrence Jackson Rux Jr. is buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Henderson, North Carolina. He was the first casualty from Henderson or Vance County in the armed forces during World War II.
