Staff Sergeant Claiborne M. Fuller was killed in action over Austria on April 4, 1945 during World War II. He was 27 years old.
Claiborne M. Fuller was born on November 5, 1917 in Vance County, North Carolina, the son of Robert Francis Fuller and Hodgie Duke Powell Fuller.
Fuller enlisted in the Army Air Corps in October, 1942 training at Lowry Field, Denver, Ohio and receiving his gunner’s wings at Ft. Myers, Florida. He was deployed to the European Theatre of War in May, 1944 serving in the 380th Bomber Squadron, 310th Bombardment Group.
When SSgt Fuller reached the 310th Bombardment Group, it was engaged bombing missions supporting the Allied invasion of Southern France. SSgt Fuller served as a tail gunner on a B-25 bomber. It was on one of these missions on April 4, 1945 that his plane went down over Austria with the loss of all hands.
Staff Sergeant Claiborne M. Fuller is buried in the Florence American Cemetery and Memorial in Florence, Italy.
