Private Leon Floyd died of pneumonia on October 17, 1918 at Langley Field Virginia while on active duty in the U. S. Army during World War I.
Leon Floyd was born on November 20, 1895 in Vance County, North Carolina, the son of George Floyd and Julia Floyd. He was engaged in farming prior to his induction into the U.S. Army on May 2, 1918.
Private Floyd entrained from Henderson, North Carolina on May 2, 1918 to Fort Wayne, Michigan where he served in the 36th Construction Company, Aviation Signal Corps.
Construction Companies, sometimes referred to as Aero Construction Companies, were United States Army Air Service units created to serve as skilled laborers in the construction of facilities relating to aviation either in the United States or in the United Kingdom. By the end of the war, over 6,000 men had enlisted across 39 construction companies.
The 36th Construction Company was organized at Fort Wayne, Michigan serving there from April through July 1918. It was transferred to Langley Field, Virginia in July 1918 and served there until demobilization in December 1918. Private Floyd died of pneumonia on October 17, 1918 while serving at Langley Field, Virginia.
