Private Rex Baskerville died of pneumonia on October 13, 1918 at the U.S. Army Hospital at Camp Greene near Charlotte, North Carolina while on active duty during World War I. He was 24 years old.
Rex Baskerville was born in Vance County, North Carolina on May 2, 1894, the son of Silas Baskerville and Lucy Bullock Baskerville. Prior to entering the Army he was engaged in farming in Middleburg Township, Vance County, North Carolina.
Pvt Baskerville was inducted into the U.S. Army on July 31, 1918 and was assigned to Company C, 349th Labor Battalion at Camp Greene, North Carolina. The 349th Labor Battalion was a segregated unit of African American soldiers serving in labor roles domestically at camps like Greene and Charleston, handling essential support tasks such as supply, maintenance and construction of barracks and other facilities. Roughly 40,000 soldiers of the 3rd and 4th Infantry Divisions trained at Camp Greene which had been established in 1917.
Private Rex Baskerville is buried in Vance County, North Carolina.
