William Balthrop Jr. was born on November 14, 1919 in Vance County, North Carolina, the son of William Balthrop Sr. and Letha Balthrop. He was employed as a farm laborer in Manson, North Carolina prior to enlisting in the U.S. Army on March 14, 1940.
Pvt Balthrop was deployed to the European Theater of War serving with Unit 4201, Quartermaster Service Company. During World War II, U.S. Army Quartermaster units provided vital logistical support, supplying everything from food, clothing, and equipment, to petroleum, vehicle maintenance, mortuary affairs, and even postal services, evolving to manage a mechanized army's complex needs.
Private William Balthrop Jr is buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Vance County.
