Samuel James Evans

Sergeant Samuel James Evans was killed in action on November 21, 1968 in Phuoc Long province, South Vietnam during the Vietnam War.  He was 23 years old.

Samuel James Evans was born on July 13, 1945 in Vance County, North Carolina, the son of Robert Elma Evans and Ruth Plummer Evans.

Sgt Samuel James Evans began his tour of duty in the Vietnam War on December 2, 1967 serving in 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Division.

The 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment ("Lancers"), part of the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, is a historic U.S. Army unit renowned for pioneering airmobile operations in Vietnam. Organized as airmobile infantry in 1965, the 2nd Battalion (2-5 Cav) served as a core element of the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). As part of the pioneering airmobile operations of the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), C Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Division—often referred to as "C/2-5 Cav, 1st Air Cav"— executed air assaults, search-and-destroy missions, and defensive operations, earning commendations for valor and effectiveness in combat. Sgt Evans was killed in action in Phuoc Long province, South Vietnam on November 21, 1968 by an exploding artillery round.

Sergeant Samuel James Evans is buried in Morning Star United Church of Christ Cemetery, Henderson, North Carolina.  His name is inscribed on panel 38W, line 025 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C.
